CASSINI IMAGING LEAD HOPES FOR PLANET-WIDE CELEBRATION OF THE PALE BLUE DOT
On July 19, 2013, NASA's Cassini spacecraft will be turned to image Saturn and its entire ring system during a total eclipse of the sun, as it has done twice before during its previous 9 years in orbit. But this time, the images that will be collected have been specifically designed for something very special. They will capture, in natural color, a glimpse of our own planet next to Saturn and its rings, during an event that will be the first time Earthlings know in advance their picture will be taken from a billion miles away. CASSINI IMAGING LEADER AWARDED HONORARY DEGREE FROM STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY
Dr. Carolyn Porco, an alumna of Stony Brook University and a planetary scientist who has played major roles in the exploration of the solar system, will be honored when Stony Brook University holds its annual Commencement ceremony on Friday, May 22 at 11:00 AM in Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. Dr. Carolyn Porco will be presented with an honorary degree of Doctor of Science by University President Dr. Shirley Strum Kenny. Carolyn Porco, the leader of the Imaging Science team on NASA'S Cassini mission at Saturn, has accepted an invitation from Star Trek director/producer, J.J.
